So it seems that the outcry has yielded some results. There have been some changes to the law (read about them here) and resale shops are no longer affected (I was pretty concerned about this since I plan on buying little new with the little one). They have exempted some materials so that handmade toys can continue to be made – mainly unpainted wood and cotton. I would imagine that they will continue to revise the law until is functions as it was intended – to target overseas manufactuers that allow higher levels of lead and phthalates than is safe.
If you haven’t already written your state representative or congressman, revisit my post on the original issue and send a letter. It doesn’t hurt to let them know that people are still concerned about the future of handmade toys.
